James Ransome's illustration career began with his first book in 1990. He has currently illustrated 60 titles, numerous book jackets, greeting cards and images for magazines. His work has received numerous awards including recognition by the Society of Illustrators. A graduate of Pratt Institute, James' art has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country and he was commissioned to create a number of murals, including three for the Underground Railroad Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio. The MTA Metro-North Railroad selected James to illustrate a poster for the New York City subway system.
He is currently an assistant professor at Syracuse University and has a traveling exhibit, Everyday People: The Art of James E. Ransome hosted by the National Center for Children's (NCCIL) museum in Abilene, Texas.
