The Light Upstairs is a middle grade chapter book exploring themes of loss, relationships, and spirituality. The Luminary is an angel living in the cosmos. After the unexpected death of their partner, they embark on a journey to meet other creatures and overcome their grief. Each god in the sky is precious and unique, but they all prove to be difficult to connect with in one way or another. A god made of wax is beautiful but self-absorbed, a god made of gold is overly concerned with gifts, and a god who collects bones cares not for who the treasures once belonged. The Luminary must discover that self-worth cannot be found in others, it can only be found inside.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Emerson (Em) Goheen is an Illustrator from Baltimore fascinated by the mystery of faith and spirituality. Their work focuses on fictionalized personal experiences from a childhood surrounded by Catholicism that blossomed into a passion for philosophy and theology. They are interested in writing and illustrating about feelings that are hard to explain, define, and communicate.

The Light Upstairs is a story that is meant to define the indefinable: the value we place in our relationships, the faith we have in ourselves, and the invisible strings that connect us all.
