Song Dynasty Night Market
2020
Digital

Song Dynasty is one of the rare times in Chinese history that had an extremely lenient curfew policy, especially during holidays, when businesses are permitted to open twenty-four hours. Night markets played a central role in Song Dynasty’s nightlife. These markets were found in corners of large cities and are known to have included restaurants, street vendors, decorated boats and attracted many people.

In my illustration, I want to capture the robustness and depict various activities that could happen in the Song Dynasty night market. I also aimed to create a bright and busy big picture that included multiple small narratives to be discovered when looked upon closely. People are an important factor of my illustration as they are the main component of the night market and it is through what they do that makes my scene lively and colorful.
